こんにちは。

もし、具体的な性能の変化や他のゲストとの競合(メモリであればバルーニングやスワップなど)が無いようでしたら、
仮想化に起因しないものかもしれないと思いました。

Windows Serverで利用されているミドルウェアやアプリケーション側でも、性能の変化や、何か通常と違うイベント(新しい業務を乗せた、通常とは違うワークロードがきた とか)がないか確認してみるとヒントを得られるかもしれません。

Sorry for the delay in responding... I was on vacation.

Can you please reproduce the problem again and then collect the ESXi host's vmkernel.log and the corresponding vmware.log for that run, and attach the pair of files to a reply in this thread?  (Just use the Attach link in the lower-right corner when composing your reply.)  That should provide more information about whether there's still a problem with the maximum IO size and possibly other places to look to understand what's happening.

Thanks,

Some questions about having our VMs running in a redundant locations

$

Hi everyone,

Hope you are all doing well. Someone brings up this topic and I like to see if you can help and share your experience.

We are a small shop of VMs and just have a small Dell system to run our VMs at our corporate site. Now we are thinking to have another system and copy/replicate all the VMs to that redundant location. That location is also one of our networks...which has its own router and traffic is run by layer 3 (in fact it is by  our single mode fiber but somehow it is set up as layer 3 while it could also been set up as layer 2).

Anyway, I would like to ask... Our VMs in different vlans with different IP schemes. If we duplicate the system in that redundant location, that means all the ip settings with the VMs be carried over still.

Let's say, how should the network setup to be for the redundant location so that when we need to turn on those VMs, they would still be accessible as if they were at the corporate site? Any solutions for that with Vcenter built in? Or anyone can share the experience on what can be done.

Thank you very much for your help!

Re: Is it possible to run Workstation Player inside a Fusion VM hosted on a Mac?

Hi,

If not completely clear. You can take the Windows XP virtual machine that you now run under VMware Player and run it directly under VMware Fusion.

No need to install VMware Player within your Windows 7/8/10 VM for that.

Virtual Machines from VMware Player work perfectly fine under Fusion.

Okay, sorry for the delay...

I've looked into this, and we've apparently got two config options to work-around this, but some of them only work on some product versions.

So try setting both of these options in your VM, and then doing a clean boot of the guest:

svga.minVRAMSize=8388608

svga.minVRAM8MB=TRUE

And that should hopefully fix your problem, and keep it fixed if the VM migrates to other VMware products, or future versions of Fusion.

This worked for me perfectly. Instead of the getAllVirtualMachines method returning all the VM's and then my iterating throught all of them it only returns the VM's that match my criteria. So in my case I'm looking for a specific VM name.

My action code is below. I'm only passing the virtual machine name (vmName) as an input variable.

//Action Object to retrieve the IP Address from a VM using the VM Tools information
System.log("*****************************************************************************");
var actionName = arguments.callee.name.substr(6);
System.log("Action Start: " + actionName);

var retIPAddress = "";

var xPathQuery = "xpath:name[translate(.,'abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz','ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ')='" + vmName.toUpperCase() + "']";
System.debug("Query: " + xPathQuery);
System.debug("VM Name : " + vmName);

var allVMs = VcPlugin.getAllVirtualMachines(null, xPathQuery);

System.debug("Number of VMs found: " + allVMs.length);

//Loop through all VM's to find the VM that matches the name parameter
for (var i in allVMs){
if (allVMs[i].name.toLowerCase() == vmName.toLowerCase()){
  var guestInfo = allVMs[i].guest;
  retIPAddress = guestInfo.ipAddress;
  System.debug(allVMs[i].name + " found!");
  System.log("IP Address: " + retIPAddress);
}
}

System.log("Action Finish: " + actionName);

return retIPAddress;

Upgrade to large disks VMWare ESXI 6.0

$

Hi! I'm using VMWare ESXI 6.0 on a HP Proliant Server. It have 2 disks in RAID 1, 600GB for the virtual machines.
I want to migrate all to new disks that are already there. 2 disks in RAID 1, 1.2TB.

What is the best way to do that? I want to continue with all data and configuration untouched, like all the configuration (IP and so on) remains the same on my network.

Sorry for my bad english and thanks in advance

Hello.

if iam correctly this Controller is a Kind of Fake-Raid and not a Real HW Raid Controller.

Windows would be able to handle it like Intel Rste

But with esxi no officially way to create a Raid with that controller.

best regards

I had a similar issue today with a Windows 2008 R2 vm.  I found a solution and thought I would pass it on in case it helps anyone else.  The problem seems to stem from a bad video driver install.  I had to go into device manager and set my video card back to a Standard VGA Adapter, restart the vm, update the video card driver back to the VMware SVGA Adapter, and restart again.  After that my mouse seemed to function normally and I was able to enter and leave the remote console without having to press ctrl + alt each time.

I hope this helps.

Brilliant! I was having troubles with my AMD card on 6.5 and setting it to link mode solved my issue!

For the lazy- ESXi uses 'ffff' as a wildcard so you can fix all AMD cards by adding:

1002 ffff link false to /etc/vmware/passthru.map

Having trouble associating hardware resources with vm

I created a Windows XP Virtual machine within Windows 10. I have a second set of keyboard, mouse, and speakers.

I followed this guide here: Connecting a second mouse or keyboard directly to a hosted virtual machine (1033435) | VMware KB

To associate a second keyboard and mouse with a virtual machine. However, after editng tje .vmx file, neither the keyboard, nor the mouse, were in the list of removable devices. What was in the list was "C-Media USB Audio Device" , which was obviously the USB speaker port I added to have a second set of speakers, specifically for the virtual machine to use. When I activate it (disconnecting from the host) I can hear audio from both sets of speakers at the same time correctly (i.e. a game in windows xp plays music only from it's speakers while music in windows 10 plays correctly from it's speaker) but every time I do so the keyboard and mouse completely stops functioning. I initially thought it was because I was using two sets of wireless keyboards and mice, so I went out and bought a wired keyboard and mouse set and had the same problem.

If I don't add the USB audio device it uses the main speakers instead, and audio settings don't do anything about it.

So, what's going on here? How do I set up the keyboard, mouse, and speakers to be associated with the virtual machine? and why can't I see a full device list?

Also: Is there any way to associate a specific display to use only with virtual machines? I'm using widescreen for windows 10, but a CRT monitor for windows XP and windows 9x. I'd rather not run it when not using the virtual machine, but turning off the monitor
doesn't remove it from a screen that windows 10 can access so windows still randomly open in it. Since I am trying to set this up as a virtual computer lab, I really want to prevent that behavior. I was hoping that there would be some way for windows 10 to not be able to see that monitor, but for it to work when an associated virtual machine is running. I know this is probably a long shot, but I figured I'd ask just in case.

Hi
> I tried the convert cd 3.0 and 4.0, trilead backup, veeam and vcenter, I have tried in copying files and browsing the datastore, I tried to clone from the shell ...
Thats the problem.
All those attempts are coming from a user that demands writeable files. So ESXi may deny access on a file-level.
In this case it helps to use readonly access on a blocklevel.

When I do a remote support session I create when ever possible a small Linux VM with direct ssh-access to the ESXi in question.

I mount the whole esxi-filetree readonly.
Next step is to find out where the "bad.vmdk" actually is located on the phsical storage.
If you are lucky you get one fragment starting at offset x with the full 2tb following.
If you have to pay for thin provisioning and snapshots you may also get a 1.000.000 single fragments scattered all over the place.
Anyway - once you know how to read the volume by one mb-pieces you can start to work around the failing locations.

just an example ...
IF=/esxi/dev/disks/naa.50012345678
OF=/vmfs-out/mailserver-flat.vmdk
CMD=dd if=$IF of=$OF bs=1M conv=notrunc

$CMD seek=185379  count=1  skip=226434 # fragment=19510#

$CMD seek=185395  count=19  skip=226435 # fragment=19515#

$CMD seek=185415  count=1  skip=226454 # fragment=19517#

$CMD seek=185417  count=2  skip=226455 # fragment=19519#

$CMD seek=185421  count=1  skip=226457 # fragment=19522#

$CMD seek=185378  count=1  skip=226458 # fragment=19509#

$CMD seek=185423  count=1  skip=226459 # fragment=19524#

$CMD seek=185394  count=1  skip=226460 # fragment=19514#

What was uncopieable before now is a bunch of pieces and if cmd1 does not work you have a small list of alternative commands.

I am quite busy at the moment - if you have any urgent issues call via skype

I will need some help with the instruction (I'm completely new in powerCLI).

I'm stuck on creating the iso.

I downloaded and installed the VMware-PowerCLI-6.5.0-4624819.exe

Created (windows 10) C:\Temp

Placed the 2 .vib files there

Then I stared the shortcut "VMware PowerCLI" (run as administrator) created after the install of VMware-PowerCLI-6.5.0-4624819.exe. It gave me some permission error which I fixed by execut in the terminal "Set-ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted -Force"

After this I'm getting the screen below when I start "VMware PowerCLI"

1.JPG

When I try to execute the command, I get

2.JPG

Please help.

.....

OK, the problem here after all was that I was using the "VMware PowerCLI" and I had to use "VMware PowerCLI (32-Bit)".

I created the iso successfully, but now I want to do a little more and facing another problem:

I want to add another driver in the image, which seems is missing a signature:

An unexpected error occured:

The VIB xxxxxxxxxxxx does not contain a signature.

I want to add it as this will allow me to have a second network adapter (USB to gigabit) in the NUC, and the best would be to have it in the iso image and not to load it manually(or at least these are my expectations).

Any suggestions how to skip the signature check?

I tried

.\ESXi-Customizer-PS-v2.5.ps1 -pkgDir C:\Temp --nosigcheck

but no success,

.\ESXi-Customizer-PS-v2.5.ps1 -pkgDir C:\Temp -NoSignatureCheck

also no success.

....

After reading a little bit more, especially in the "ESXi-Customizer-PS-v2.5.ps1" script, I found that the right command for me is:

.\ESXi-Customizer-PS-v2.5.ps1 -pkgDir C:\Temp -nsc

Now I have the ISO with all 3 drivers inside and hopefully I can get a NUC5PPYH with 2 native lan adapters,just waiting the adapter to be delivered to me.
